Lilly
She lost her hearing at the age of six. Since then she
hasn’t enjoyed talking. The last thing she remembers hearing was Elvis
Presley’s smooth voice playing in the background of her parent’s SVU as they
drove to the hospital. That seemed to be her most vivid memory of hearing
things.
Since then she hasn’t enjoyed talking, as I’ve had said a few sentences before. She had the vivd lisp that many deaf persons had and it annoyed her to no end when people gave her the condescending look. The ‘aw, she tries so hard’ kind of look. But it had been twenty years since she started losing her hearing and she’s gotten used to it. It was something you had to get used to.

It wasn’t that she was a cynical person, she preferred the
term realist. Meaning that she looked at things realistically, but you most
likely don’t need me to tell you that, since many of you probably think of
yourselves as a realist. Well, Lilly thinks of herself as a realist as well.
But really, Lilly tries everything in her power to not live in any form of fantasy. She avoids reading too many fiction books, because she believes it would give her high expectations. She avoids watching too many romantic comedies (really, romance films in general), comedy, generally happy films because of the faulty message it sends to its audience. It gives them the message that their lives will be like in a film, when in actually it will never be like a movie. Life is like coffee, too much cream and sugar and you ruin your coffee. Too little cream and sugar the coffee is equally ruined. But just the right amount of cream and sugar makes the cup of coffee perfect. That is until it get too cold, it is then again ruined.
She didn’t like to her hopes up. When one gets their hopes up they are even more crushed when their hope is crushed between the two thick walls of realism.

When she met that guy at work she was less than excited. But
he persisted to ask her out so eventually she had to say yes.
Lilly is a realist. She likes realism. But the realistic
part of life is that you have to accept that you may or may not fall in love.
To think otherwise means one is living in a fantasy world masked by the mask of
realism. Lilly did not want to accept the fact that she could be happy and be
in love, but eventually she had to accept that. Because it is a fact of life.
